Admit it. The only physical representation we have left of long-dead dinosaurs are their bones, preserved as fossils. They can come in a range of colors, depending on the soil and water conditions in which they were preserved, but they’re still just bones. I’m not saying that when you’ve seen one set of bones you’veContinue reading “King of Fort Peck”

Uplifting view
The Canadian Rockies have an amazing geological history, but beyond that, they are just a jaw-dropping vista. Today’s campground is in Canmore, Alberta, which is in a valley between two ranges of mountains. From Calgary and even closer, the mountains have been obscured somewhat by a haze. We saw the haze even further east, onContinue reading “Uplifting view”
We teleport to Vulcan
We are not hardcore Star Trek fans. Really. No fake ears and elongated eyebrows for us. But when we saw that our trip into Canada would take us near Vulcan, Alberta, home to the city’s touristy Trek Station? How could we resist? It’s a fun stop, complete with props and displays from the original seriesContinue reading “We teleport to Vulcan”
Sunset in the oil patch
Sometimes you just have to take the shot. Even if it means stopping on a hill in the middle of a highway. Luckily for us, it was pretty darn deserted, south of Chinook, Montana. In the few minutes I stopped there was no traffic either direction. This is just north of the Bear Paw Battlefield,Continue reading “Sunset in the oil patch”
Journal entry, 22 July 2022
Dear travel diary I’d like this to become a separate, daily addition to the blog, but I’m not sure yet how to make that happen. So here’s a random entry off by itself. Travel day from Fort Peck Downstream CG toEdgewater Inn and RV Park in Malta. Drove through Saco, MT, which apparently is whereContinue reading “Journal entry, 22 July 2022”
Stygi-what? A truly scary dinosaur
First, please allow this appeal to all my wealthy blog followers: Do you have a spare $2 million lying about, unused? How about building a new home for the Garfield County Museum in Jordan, Montana? I’m sure it would be tax-deductible. This is another of the dinotrail museums that focuses on the county’s past andContinue reading “Stygi-what? A truly scary dinosaur”
Fort Peck teaser
Sorry to do it this way, but the Corps of Engineers campsite is down in a hole below the dam. That means not much signal, on either of our data options. So here’s a taste of what’s to come. Hope to have better access at the next stop. And the only reason I can postContinue reading “Fort Peck teaser”
Diving into Glendive
As our trip along the Montana Dinosaur Trail continues, we have managed to hit two museums and a state park in one day. Makoshika State Park (https://mtdinotrail.org/makoshika-state-park/) near Glendive, Montana, has a small but informative dinosaur museum in the park visitor center. The park is in the Hell Creek Formation, which is famous for allContinue reading “Diving into Glendive”
Dino-might in a tiny town
Ekalaka, Montana, is an amazing little town. Smaller by far in population than my home town in Arkansas, it has a school, postoffice, a couple of restaurants, a library, a hospital a couple of bars, a community swimming pool, and a museum. But it’s the museum that makes the town stand out, in my mind.Continue reading “Dino-might in a tiny town”
A truly ‘cute’ trailer
We came upon this gem at the visitor center of Custer State Park in South Dakota. People tell us our little R-pod is cute. This one takes cute to an entirely new level. It was built by a company in England. I bet the story of its journey to the U.S. is a good one.Continue reading “A truly ‘cute’ trailer”
