Sunset in the oil patch

One of my favorite photos of this trip. Nodding donkey/pumpjack on an oilwell north of Bear Paw Battlefield Park and south of Chinook, Montana. Yes, I stopped in the middle of the road, on a hill, to get this photo. No cars from either direction.

Sometimes you just have to take the shot. Even if it means stopping on a hill in the middle of a highway.

Luckily for us, it was pretty darn deserted, south of Chinook, Montana. In the few minutes I stopped there was no traffic either direction.

This is just north of the Bear Paw Battlefield, where the Nez Peace were finally captured by the U.S. Army and where Chief Joseph gave his famous “I will fight n0 more forever” speech.

It was a sobering walk through the area. More on that later, I promise.
