Five Photos: Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds

The 4-H club was an important part of my youth.

Formative, as they say. It led to raising and showing Herefords, which paid for going into photography, and that led to journalism and then my entire career.

But in Goshen, Indiana, 4-H is REALLY big, at least as judged by the county fair.

The Elkhart County 4-H Fair has a long history, dating back 150 years.

It isn’t just the Elkhart County Fair. It’s the Elkhart County 4-H Fair!

I suppose having a big county fair shouldn’t be surprising in a county with more than 200,000 people, but it’s an impressive site, and they just celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first county fair in town.

We are at the fairgrounds for this year’s Forest River Owners Group (FROG) Rally, for those of us in R-Pods and any of the other RVs manufactured by Forest River.

Haven’t visited the museum yet, but the flowers are impressive. Those giant hibiscus blooms, especially. I was surprised that they grew this far north.

The five photos started out as a simple celebration of the flower beds in front of many of the buildings, because Vicki and I know and appreciate that level of commitment to working on the landscaping.

Coneflowers adorn the Dairy Barn at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds.
Every building has an impressive display of flowers, and many have engraved boulders to honor contributors.

But it became a trip down 4-H memory lane. So I’ll just say, with a big smile, here’s to you, 4-H Clubs and county fairs and Cooperative Extension agents and home economists! Thanks to you all!

This year marked the 150th anniversary of the county fair in Goshen. And 4-H is a big part of it.
